100% Chardonnay. Jurassic marl soils with chalky layers 10 to 20 cm thick. Whole bunch pressed, lightly crushed, long alcoholic fermentation in barrel followed by malolactic fermentation on lees without batonnage. 16 months in 100% new French oak from Allier and Jupilles forests, light and long soft toast. One racking before bottling, fining but no filtration.
Le Charlemagne is one of the historic climats within the Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru appellation, situated on the upper south-facing slopes of the Hill of Corton in the Côte de Beaune. These vineyards take their name from the Emperor Charlemagne, who gifted these hillsides to the Abbey of Saulieu in 775. The chalky Jurassic marl soils at altitude produce Chardonnay of extraordinary tension, mineral depth and ageing potential.
Luminous golden with a deeply expressive nose of white flowers, ripe orchard fruit, honey, toasted almond and a finely integrated oakiness that speaks of exceptional raw material and meticulous craft. On the palate the wine is grand in every sense: rich, layered and precisely tensioned, with a mineral spine of remarkable purity and a finish of extraordinary length. Burgundy white at its most majestic.
A natural partner for foie gras, lobster, langoustines and caviar. Also exceptional with turbot, scallops in cream sauce or aged mountain cheeses.
