100% Sauvignon Blanc, grown on iron-rich Gneiss soils in Weststeiermark. After destemming, the grapes are gently crushed and spend four weeks on the skins before gentle pressing. The wine then undergoes spontaneous primary and malolactic fermentation and matures for twelve months in used 500-litre wooden barrels, split between acacia and oak. No fining, no filtration, no added sulphur.
Sonne means sun in German, and it is an apt name for the most generous and expansive wine in the TLZ range. Mature fruit and lavish skin-contact notes leave no space for the grassy characteristics of commercial Sauvignons. This is Sauvignon Blanc as you have almost certainly never encountered it before.
The colour is a luminous amber gold. On the nose it is heady and complex: dried apricot, candied orange peel, acacia blossom, beeswax, and a faint spice from the long skin contact.
On the palate it is rich and layered, with a silky texture, gentle tannins from the extended maceration, and a long, mineral finish that keeps the whole thing grounded and precise.
This is one of Strohmeier’s top wines, a real keeper. Older vintages are truly stunning if you can wait.
At the table, it pairs beautifully with aged cheeses, foie gras, roasted root vegetables, or slow-cooked poultry. It is also one of those rare wines that works just as well alone, as something to sit with and contemplate.
